The Vietnam Women’s Museum is located at 36 Ly Thuong Kiet street in Hanoi. Besides cultural meaning, the museum is a centre for cultural exchange between Vietnamese and international women for the goal of equality, development and peace.

Vietnamese Women’s Museum was established in 1987 and run by Vietnam Women’s Union. The museum opened in 1995 and had been renovated between 2006 and 2010. The museum reopened in 2010 with a contemporary architecture and modern facilities.

Vietnamese Women’s Museum presents about 28, 000 objects and materials from the rich collection gathered by the museum and Vietnam Women’s Union since 1970s showing the role the Vietnamese women in the history and current life. The museum also organizes thematic exhibitions to show changes and development of the contemporary society.

Hanoi’s Vietnam Women’s Museum features displays across five floors delivering over three sections – women in family, women in history and women’s fashion. The permanent exhibition renovated between 2006 and 2010 is located on the 2nd, the 3rd, and the 4th floors of the museum. The main building of the museum is divided in 4 areas including permanent exhibition, special exhibition, discovery corner and the museum shop.

“Women in family” focuses on the role and position of women in their family such as wedding’s costumes, the desire for children, the pregnancy, the birth and the care of newborn. The first part also focuses on daily life of Vietnamese women such as cultivation, fishing, cooking and raising children.

“Women in history” describes different aspects of Vietnamese women during the wars such as their stories, contributions and sacrifice.

“Women’s fashion” offers diversified fashion and costume art using traditional techniques of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam.

Vietnam Women’s Museum has moved from a cultural and historical museum to a gender museum with function of research, preservation and display of tangible and intangible heritages of Vietnamese women.

Because of its rich identity and cultural traditions, the museum has been ranked “One of the best attractions in Hanoi in 2012” by TripAdvisor – one of the most prestigious world tourist websites. In 2013, TripAdvisor continued to name Vietnamese Women’s Museum in the top 25 most interesting museums in Asia. In 2014, Vietnamese Women’s Museum was rated by Tripadvisor Website in Top 3 of the 94 best attractions in Hanoi.
